Crossings

Crossings | Wei Leng Tay (March 2018 - May 2019) | NUS Museum

Crossings was a 15-month solo exhibition collaboration with NUS Museum and Curator Sidd Perez that ran from March 2018-May 2019. It was a four-part exhibition of my research and works from 2014-2018 that span stories of lived and inherited migrations of individuals from different generations and backgrounds in Pakistan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Through a process that begins with interviews and continues with a formal interrogation of the image and voice as document, ideas of agency, relationships and nation implicit to moving between places of home are elaborated.

The first iteration, which ran from March 8 till the end of April 2018 comprised 2 works. "You think it over slowly, slowly choose ...“ : 13x50 (2018) and a 3 video 6 audio channel-projection installation "And this is the lady and her pond” (2015-2018).

The second iteration opened May 3, 2018, with a performance of multilingual recitations by 4 members of the public, of the testimonials of people I had encountered and interviewed. This iteration ran till the end of June and the installation focused on the work "And the first chapter it begins with the horses." It occupied the gallery with remnants of the work "You think it over slowly, slowly choose ...“ from the first iteration.

The third iteration saw The Other Shore (2014-2016) sharing the space with a further diminished version of "You think it over slowly, slowly choose ...": 13x50.

The last iteration, running from October 2018-May 2019, revisited "You think it over slowly, slowly choose ...“(2018). In this iteration, the tissue prints were removed. In their place, a 4-channel text and video projection emerged.

The exhibition was located in the Archaeology Library of the museum, putting my works in context and in conversation with the excavated artefacts and sherds in the space.
