Abridge

Abridge

Wei Leng Tay. Bus ride, Hong Kong to Zhuhai, 28/1/2019. 2021. Single channel 16:9 video, colour, stereo sound. 36 min 38 sec. Looped.  Wood and diffusion filter screen.

Abridge (2018-2021) asks how the reflexive nature with which one thinks about one’s past, and how existing photographs can be reconsidered, can be brought together to complicate one’s understanding of either. How can longing, anxiety and shifting identities that come with movement through entangled geographies and shifting political realities influence one’s projection of the self and the reconstruction of images, themselves projections?

The prints are re-photographs of earlier photographs I had made in Hong Kong from 1999-2015 -- the time when I lived there.

In 2021, Abridge was exhibited University of Sydney Verge Gallery, Australia, and WMA Space, Hong Kong, curated by Olivier Krischer. On this page are a video and a few works from the project. Links to reviews, panel discussions, and features on the project can be seen here. Here is the link for the curatorial statement.
